Is stress making your life a misery? No wonder; not only is it mentally exhausting, it’s also extremely physically uncomfortable. Your heart rate increases, your blood pressure escalates, and blood flow from your intestines gets diverted to your limbs often causing indigestion.

But that’s not the end of the bad news.

Stress prevents you from thinking clearly, reducing the effective functioning of your neo-cortex. And the likelihood is that clear, rational thinking is vital to moving you out of your stressful situation. Ironic, isn’t it?

Also, long-term stress can have serious health consequences. The raised levels of cortisol in your bloodstream kill off brain cells, increasing the risk of Alzheimer’s; and escalates the deterioration of muscle tissue. Raised blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease. For women, stress releases more oxytocin into the blood and this can have an adverse effect on fertility.

So, what to do? After all, you might say, life just is stressful.

But how is it that what stresses one person, leaves another untouched?

What is important is the attitude you bring to your experiences and circumstances, more than the situations themselves. And you can’t always avoid difficult times, because it’s not only bad events that are stressful. A wedding, moving house, and the birth of a child are all commonly experienced as stressful events; good, exciting, and wonderful – but stressful.

Effective stress management techniques which promote a calm and flexible attitude are therefore vital life skills.

Whether the stress that you experience is due to outside circumstances, or whether it’s an inside job, it is vital to find effective coping mechanisms.

Stress Management therapy deals with the symptoms of stress and offers various methods to control it going forward, including relaxation techniques and mindfulness meditation.

“Sarah is very calm and clear about the sessions, about ensuring I got what I needed from them, and that she understood me. What makes Sarah incredible is an innate talent or instinct about what else is going on underneath.  I felt so safe in Sarah’s hands and left feeling much freer.
